Trends 2013: Modi, Sachin, iPhone 5s Lead Facebook Mentions Read more at: http://www.lightreading.in/lightreadingindia/news-analysis/286675/trends-2013-modi-sachin-iphone-5s-lead-facebook-mentions?utm_source=referrence_article

US-based social networking giant Facebook has revealed the list of most talked about topics of 2013 in India and worldwide. On its platform in India, BJP Prime Ministerial Candidate Narendra Modi, legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar and Apple’s iPhone 5s were the top topics of discussion in 2013.

The list clearly demonstrates the growing influence of the Indian audience in discussing and debating about people and things that matters to them. Given the increasing push by telecom providers to increase ‘internet access on mobile,’ the list can also act as an indication to identify the consumer likings in the year. Modi’s inclusion may not be considered as a surprise considering Modi’s striking speeches across India and his aggressive usage of technology and social media channels to share his views across the Indian political ecosystem.

As for India’s all-time favorite sportsman Sachin Tendulkar, his name featuring among the top ones is hardly a revelation because of his decision to retire from international cricket this year. Also known as the 'Little Master of Cricket', Tendulkar is the first sportsperson to be conferred with Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award.

iPhone 5s inclusion indicates that India can no longer be considered as an inferior market when it comes to technology adoption. It reflects that consumers are interested in knowing about the new technology and given an opportunity are also ready to embrace it fully. Apple’s latest iPhone making it to the list despite being released barely three months ago shows the growing popularity of high-end devices and smartphones in India.

On a case study point, internet and social media also played a key role in the impressive debut of ‘Aam Aadmi Party’ in the Delhi Assembly Election which chose the web platform in an intelligent way to garner fund and support for their party. In the year 2014, telcos and device makers could take a clue from the trends and can strategize their offerings around related areas.

The most talked about topics were calculated based on the total number of mentions by people on the platform. New RBI governor Raghuram Rajan and India’s ambitious Mangalyaan project were the other leading topics being discussed most by people in the country on Facebook.

'Humans evolved after a female chimpanzee mated with a pig': Extraordinary claim made by American geneticist

    ·  Dr Eugene McCarthy points to features that distinguish us from primates
    ·  He says that the only animals which also have these features are pigs
    ·  Controversial hypothesis has been met by significant opposition

The human species began as the hybrid offspring of a male pig and a female chimpanzee, a leading geneticist has suggested.
The startling claim has been made by Eugene McCarthy, of the University of Georgia, who is also one of the worlds leading authorities on hybridisation in animals.
He points out that while humans have many features in common with chimps, we also have a large number of distinguishing characteristics not found in any other primates.

Dr McCarthy says these divergent characteristics are most likely the result of a hybrid origin at some point far back in human evolutionary history.
What's more, he suggests, there is one animal that has all of the traits which distinguish humans from our primate cousins in the animal kingdom.
'What is this other animal that has all these traits?' he asks rhetorically. 'The answer is Sus scrofa, the ordinary pig.'
Dr McCarthy elaborates his astonishing hypothesis in an article on Macroevolution.net, a website he curates. He is at pains to point out that that it is merely a hypothesis, but he presents compelling evidence to support it.

Scientists currently suppose that chimpanzees are humans' closest living evolutionary relatives, a theory amply backed by genetic evidence.
However, as Dr McCarthy points out, despite this genetic similarity, there are a massive number of divergent anatomical characteristics distinguishing the two species.
These distinguishing characteristics, including hairless skin, a thick layer of subcutaneous fat, light-coloured eyes, protruding noses and heavy eyelashes, to name but a few, are unmistakeably porcine, he suggests.
There are also a number of less obvious but equally inexplicable similarities between humans and pigs in the structure of the skin and organs.
Indeed, pig skin tissues and heart valves can be used in medicine because of their similarity and compatibility with the human body.

Dr McCarthy says that the original pig-chimp hook up was probably followed by several generations of 'backcrossing', where the offspring of that pairing lived among chimps and mated with them - becoming more like chimps and less like pigs with every new generation.
This also helps to explain the problem of relative infertility in hybrids. Dr McCarthy points out that the belief that all hybrids are sterile is in fact false, and in many cases hybrid animals are able to breed with mates of the same species of either parent.

After several generations the hybrid strain would have become fertile enough to breed amongst themselves, Dr McCarthy says.

Unsurprisingly, Dr McCarthy's hypothesis has come in for substantial criticism from orthodox evolutionary biologists and their Creationist opponents alike.

One important criticism, which dubs his theory the 'Monkey-F******-A-Pig hypothesis', is that there is little chance that pigs and chimps could be interfertile. The two orders of creatures, according to evolutionary theory, diverged roughly 80million years ago, a ScienceBlogs post points out.

'Just the gradual accumulation of molecular differences in sperm and egg recognition proteins would mean that pig sperm wouldn’t recognize a chimpanzee egg as a reasonable target for fusion,' PZ Myers writes.
Furthermore, the blogger explains, while chimps have 48 chromosomes, pigs have just 38.
He adds: 'Hybridizing a pig and a chimp is like taking half the dancers from a performance of Swan Lake and the other half from a performance of Giselle and throwing them together on stage to assemble something. It’s going to be a catastrophe.'

Finally, he suggests rather impudently that Dr McCarthy do the experimental work himself and try mating with a pig to see how far he gets.

But Dr McCarthy believes that, in the case of humans and other creatures, his hybrid modification to evolutionary theory can account for a range of phenomena that Darwinian evolution alone has difficulty explaining.
Despite the opinions of some peer reviewers that Dr McCarthy's work presents a potentially paradigm-shifting new take on conventional views of the origins of new life forms, he has had difficulty finding a publisher, so he has chosen to publish a book-length manuscript outlining his ideas on his website.

In its conclusion he writes: 'I must admit that I initially felt a certain amount of repugnance at the idea of being a hybrid. The image of a pig mating with an ape is not a pretty one, nor is that of a horde of monstrous half-humans breeding in a hybrid swarm.

'But the way we came to be is not so important as the fact that we now exist. As every Machiavellian knows, good things can emerge from ugly processes, and I think the human race is a very good thing. Moreover, there is something to be said for the idea of having the pig as a relative.

'My opinion of this animal has much improved during the course of my research. Where once I thought of filth and greed, I now think of intelligence, affection, loyalty, and adaptability, with an added touch of joyous sensuality — qualities without which humans would not be human.'

Mangalyaan enters inot the orbit of Mars

India's maiden spacecraft to Mars has successfully left the Earth's orbit and is now cruising towards Mars after a crucial and tricky midnight operation. The complex operation began as planned at 49 minutes after midnight and lasted 23 minutes in which the spacecraft was given a nudge so that it escapes the Earth's gravity.

Indian Space Research Organisation or ISRO says the operation went off successfully and the Mangalyaan has left the Earth's embrace and is now on course on the highway to Mars.

"The trans-Mars injection has been completed successfully," K Radhakrishnan, Chairman of ISRO, told NDTV.

Launched on November 5, 2013 from Sriharikota, the Mangalyaan had till now been rotating around the Earth. It was given that final extra kick through a sling shot mechanism as it began its over 750 million kilometer journey to Mars. Each day, the Mangalyaan will cover over 2.5 million km hurtling into space till it is slowed down to be captured by Mars.

About 250 scientists from ISRO monitored its health. The command for the spacecraft to leave the Earth's orbit and head into the Sun-centric orbit was executed from the Mission Operations Center in Bangalore.

The success of the mission can be assessed only when the spacecraft reaches the Martian orbit on September 24, 2014. Once it reaches Mars, the Mangalyaan will revolve around the 'Red Planet' for six months and announce India's triumph.

However, the risks are many and no country till date has succeeded in reaching Mars on its maiden attempt. More than half of all missions to Mars have ended in failure, including China's in 2011 and Japan's in 1998.

The Rs. 450-crore mission to Mars has made international headlines, at least in part for its cost-efficiency.

India's economy grows faster than expected

India's economic growth rate picked up strongly in the second quarter, according to official figures.
The economy expanded at an annual rate of 4.8% in the July-to-September period, up from 4.4% in the previous quarter.
The acceleration was faster than analysts had been expecting.
Asia's third-largest economy has been weighed down by various factors, such as high inflation, a weak currency and a drop in foreign investment.
This is the fourth quarter in a row that India's annual growth rate has been below the 5% mark, and the previous quarter's rate of 4.4% was the lowest for four years.
Earlier this year, the Indian prime minister's economic advisory council lowered the growth outlook for the current financial year.
It now expects the economy to expand by 5.3% this year, down from its earlier projection of 6.4%.
    Growth hurdles
India's economy has been hurt by a range of factors in recent months, including a slowdown in key sectors such as mining and manufacturing.
Slowing growth, coupled with a recovery in developed markets, such as the US, has made India a less attractive option for foreign investors.
Speculation that the US may scale back its key economic stimulus measure has seen investors pull money out of emerging markets, such as India.
This has affected India's currency, which dipped nearly 25% against the US dollar between January and September this year.
Though the rupee has recovered a little since then, it is still down about 13% against the dollar since the start of this year.
That has made imports more expensive and contributed to a high rate of consumer inflation, which was 10.1% October, up from 9.84% in September.
High food and fuel prices have contributed to inflation becoming "entrenched", finance minister P Chidambaram said.
As a result, the central bank has had to raise the cost of borrowing in a bid to curb inflation.
The latest interest rate rise in October saw the key rate increase to 7.75%.
Some observers argue that high interest rates are hurting businesses and households, and having a negative impact on the economy.
"A combination of weak investment, high inflation and tight monetary policy would not let India's economic recovery gather steam any time soon," Miguel Chanco, Asia economist at Capital Economics, told the BBC.
